TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 223
Q1. Iran has reportedly offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the United States accepts certain conditions. Should India remain neutral or play a more active diplomatic role?
Answer: Sir/Ma'am, India should maintain strategic autonomy while supporting an active diplomatic solution. The Strait of Hormuz is important for India's energy imports and international shipping. Any prolonged disruption can increase fuel prices, inflation and transport costs. India maintains important relationships with Iran, the United States and Gulf countries. These relationships provide opportunities for constructive dialogue. However, India should avoid making commitments that exceed its diplomatic influence. It should support freedom of navigation, humanitarian concerns and negotiations based on international law. My view is that strategic autonomy should not mean diplomatic silence. India should contribute to peace wherever it can do so credibly and responsibly.
Q2. The Russia–Ukraine conflict has raised allegations of attacks on humanitarian facilities and misuse of ceasefires. Can temporary ceasefires create lasting peace?
