TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 211
Q1. India and the United States are reportedly close to a trade agreement. Should India accept compromises to strengthen its strategic partnership?
Answer: Sir/Ma'am, India should approach the trade agreement with flexibility, but not at the cost of its long-term national interests. The United States is an important economic and strategic partner. Better market access could benefit Indian exporters, industries and employment. However, agriculture, small businesses and sensitive sectors require careful protection. India should examine tariff concessions, regulatory commitments and the agreement's effect on domestic production. We must also avoid allowing differences over energy purchases to dominate the entire relationship. My view is that a successful agreement should create mutual economic benefits while preserving India's strategic autonomy and policy-making freedom. Source: The Indian Express, 22 October 2026. The agreement is described as under negotiation, not concluded.
