TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 205
Q1. India and the United States are close strategic partners. Why should India still maintain strategic autonomy?
Answer: Sir/Ma'am, India should maintain strong relations with the United States without compromising its independent foreign policy. The United States is important for technology, defence, trade and investment. However, both countries have different national interests in certain areas, including energy security and relations with other major powers. India should cooperate where interests converge and manage disagreements through dialogue. It should also strengthen relations with Europe, Russia, Japan and other partners. Domestic economic and technological capabilities are equally important. My view is that strategic autonomy does not mean opposing powerful countries. It means having the freedom and capacity to make decisions according to India's long-term national interests.
