1. India’s exports have risen sharply, but the trade deficit has also widened. How should we interpret this?
Answer: Rising exports are positive because they show stronger external demand and successful diversification towards newer markets. However, imports have grown even faster, so the trade deficit has widened. Therefore, export growth alone should not be treated as proof of stronger external-sector resilience. In my view, India should focus on higher-value manufacturing, better logistics, trade finance and market diversification. The real objective should be to improve the quality and competitiveness of exports while reducing unnecessary import dependence. A strong trade position depends not only on gross export numbers but also on the structure of imports, value addition and long-term competitiveness.
