ANUGYAN: India’s First Industry–Academia Programme in Nuclear Technology
Context: IIT Hyderabad, in collaboration with Crimson Energy Experts Pvt. Ltd., launched ANUGYAN – Nuclear Technology Orientation Programme (NTOP) in August 2026. IIT Hyderabad describes it as India’s first industry–academia programme in nuclear technology. The three-month residential programme seeks to prepare engineers and professionals for India’s expanding civil nuclear sector.
Background: India’s nuclear programme has traditionally depended on specialised institutions such as BARC, NPCIL and other Department of Atomic Energy organisations for technical manpower. However, India’s planned nuclear expansion now requires a much larger pool of trained engineers. Current installed nuclear capacity is about 8.78 GW, targeted to rise to roughly 22 GW by 2031–32 and 100 GW by 2047.
Salient Features: ANUGYAN combines classroom learning with industry exposure. Its curriculum covers areas such as reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, Small Modular Reactors, radiation safety, emergency preparedness and nuclear operations. Participants learn from IIT faculty as well as experienced professionals associated with India’s nuclear ecosystem, and receive joint certification.
India’s Approach: India sees nuclear power as a reliable, low-carbon source supporting energy security, Viksit Bharat 2047 and the Net-Zero 2070 goal. The Nuclear Energy Mission also provides ₹20,000 crore for SMR development, with at least five indigenous SMRs targeted by 2033.
Current Status: The inaugural ANUGYAN batch commenced at IIT Hyderabad in August 2026. Its significance lies in building deployment-ready manpower alongside reactor expansion, indigenous SMRs and growing industry participation in India’s nuclear-energy ecosystem.

1. Why is ANUGYAN important when India already has institutions such as BARC and NPCIL?
Answer: BARC and NPCIL have deep technical expertise, but India’s planned nuclear expansion needs a much larger skilled workforce. ANUGYAN can widen the talent pipeline by linking academic learning with industry needs. It can prepare engineers faster for design, safety, operations, manufacturing and project execution roles.
2. How can industry–academia cooperation improve India’s nuclear energy programme?
Answer: Universities can provide research, theory and young talent, while industry can provide practical problems, tools and operating experience. This combination reduces the gap between classroom knowledge and actual plant requirements. It can also improve innovation, shorten training time and make graduates more useful from the beginning of employment.
3. Why are Small Modular Reactors important in India’s future nuclear strategy?
Answer: SMRs may offer smaller unit size, modular construction and more flexible deployment than conventional large reactors. They could serve industrial clusters or areas where very large plants are unsuitable. However, India must still prove their economics, safety, supply chains and regulatory framework before large-scale commercial use.
4. What is the biggest challenge in expanding India’s nuclear capacity to 100 GW by 2047?
Answer: The challenge is not only building reactors. India also needs trained manpower, financing, manufacturing capacity, fuel security, timely clearances, strong safety regulation and public trust. Delays in any one area can slow expansion. Therefore, capacity growth must be supported by the entire nuclear ecosystem, not just construction targets.
5. How can nuclear power support both India’s energy security and climate goals?
Answer: Nuclear power provides large amounts of low-carbon electricity and can operate continuously, unlike weather-dependent renewable sources. It can therefore complement solar and wind while reducing fossil-fuel dependence. For India, the best approach is a balanced energy mix combining nuclear, renewables, storage, grids and efficiency.
