TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 136
1. What does the alleged honey-trap espionage case involving an IAF officer reveal about modern national-security threats?
Answer: Modern espionage is no longer limited to stealing documents or recruiting spies physically. Social media, malware, remote-access tools and psychological manipulation can target even highly trained personnel. This means national security depends as much on human behaviour as on secure technology. In my view, defence institutions need continuous cyber-hygiene training, behavioural-risk awareness, device security and strong counter-intelligence systems. At the same time, excessive surveillance of personnel should be avoided. The larger lesson is that trusted insiders can become the weakest link, so security policy must protect both networks and people.
