Sungal Tunnel on Jammu–Poonch National Highway

Context

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has opened the Sungal Tunnel on the Jammu–Poonch road ahead of its scheduled date, improving connectivity to the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch. The tunnel was opened initially for limited traffic around Independence Day 2026.

• The 2.79-km-long tunnel is located on NH-144A, the strategic Akhnoor–Poonch road, and cuts through the Kalidhar Range.
• It has been constructed by BRO under Project Sampark, which develops strategic infrastructure in the Jammu region and areas close to the Line of Control.
• The project forms part of the widening and upgrading of NH-144A to a two-lane road with paved shoulders.

Historical Background

The tunnel is part of the wider programme to improve the strategic Jammu–Akhnoor–Rajouri–Poonch corridor. Its breakthrough was achieved in May 2024, followed by structural, road and safety works before operationalisation.

India’s Stand and Importance

As an Indian strategic infrastructure project, it reflects the Government’s policy of strengthening all-weather border connectivity. It will support faster civilian movement, trade, tourism and emergency services, while also improving military logistics towards the LoC.

Current Status

As of August 2026, the tunnel has been opened initially for light vehicles during restricted daytime hours, with traffic operations expected to expand progressively towards full, round-the-clock use.
