The State of India’s Environment (SOE) 2026 Report, released by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and Down To Earth magazine, provides a comprehensive assessment of India’s environmental conditions and emerging climate challenges. The report highlights that humanity has already crossed 7 of the 9 planetary boundaries, which define the ecological limits within which human civilization can safely operate. The latest boundary to be breached is ocean acidification, largely caused by rising carbon dioxide levels. Since the industrial era, ocean acidity has increased by 30–40%, posing a serious threat to marine ecosystems such as coral reefs and plankton.
The report also emphasizes the growing intensity of extreme weather events in India. In 2025, nearly 99% of the days between January and November recorded extreme weather in some part of the country, leading to 4,419 deaths and damage to about 17.41 million hectares of crops. States such as Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, and Madhya Pradesh were among the most affected.
