New Outbreak of Bird Flu (H5N1) in Japan

A new outbreak of Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) has recently been reported in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, where the virus was detected at a poultry farm. Preliminary tests suggest the presence of an H5 subtype of the influenza A virus, possibly H5N1, and further laboratory analysis is being conducted to confirm the strain. Avian Influenza is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects domestic poultry and wild birds, often leading to large-scale mortality and economic losses in the poultry sector.

The disease is caused by Influenza A viruses, characterized by two surface proteins—Hemagglutinin (H) and Neuraminidase (N)—which determine different subtypes such as H5N1, H5N8, and H9N2. Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) strains like H5N1 can cause near 100% mortality in chickens, while Low Pathogenic strains cause milder symptoms but still trigger trade restrictions. Wild aquatic birds such as ducks and geese act as natural reservoirs, spreading the virus through saliva, nasal secretions, and droppings.
