Context: India has recently released a comprehensive Space Cyber Security Framework through CERT-In in collaboration with SIA-India to safeguard its rapidly expanding space ecosystem from cyber threats.
Introduction and Salient Features: The framework provides technical and operational guidelines to protect satellites, communication systems, and related infrastructure. It adopts a segment-wise approach covering the space segment (satellites), ground segment (control centres), and link segment (communication channels). It identifies threats such as jamming, spoofing, unauthorized command uplinks, and firmware manipulation. A key feature is mandatory incident reporting within six hours to CERT-In. The framework promotes zero-trust architecture, encryption standards, and a “secure-by-design” approach from the development stage.
