Context: The Ministry of Railways has unveiled the Rail Tech Policy as part of its “52 Reforms in 52 Weeks” initiative to accelerate modernization and innovation in Indian Railways. Alongside, a dedicated Rail Tech Portal has been launched to streamline innovation proposals.
Introduction and Salient Features: The Rail Tech Policy is an innovation-driven framework aimed at integrating advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and drones into railway operations. It provides a structured platform for startups, MSMEs, and innovators to offer solutions to operational, safety, and maintenance challenges. The policy replaces the traditional vendor-based procurement system with a “trial and adoption” model. It also includes financial incentives such as up to 50% cost-sharing for technology development, enhanced grants for prototypes, and assured market access after successful trials.
