Historically, Odisha has relied primarily on the Biju Patnaik International Airport at Bhubaneswar, which has faced capacity constraints amid rising passenger traffic. The proposed airport aims to decentralise aviation infrastructure and cater to the growing demand, particularly from the globally significant pilgrimage centre of Puri, one of the Char Dham sites. It is expected to boost tourism, facilitate international connectivity, and generate employment in sectors such as hospitality, handicrafts, and logistics.
