RUSSULA GRISEOPURPURATA: NEW MUSHROOM SPECIES DISCOVERED IN INDIA
Context: A new mushroom species, Russula griseopurpurata, has been described from India, highlighting the country’s still underexplored fungal diversity. The species was formally reported in the international taxonomic journal Phytotaxa in August 2026. Researchers used both morphological features and DNA-based analysis to establish it as a distinct species.
Background and Discovery: The holotype specimen was collected on 22 July 2022 from Jirang in Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya, at about 320 metres above sea level. It was found below sal trees (Shorea robusta). The species has subsequently been recorded from Meghalaya and West Bengal.
Salient Features: The mushroom belongs to the genus Russula, which contains around 2,000 species globally, with more than 180 reported from India. It has a distinctive greyish-purple cap, which develops cracks with maturity, while its gills show characteristic branching near the stalk. It has been placed within Russula subsection Cyanoxanthinae. Its edibility has not been established, so it should not be regarded as safe for consumption.
Ecological Importance: Russula species commonly form ectomycorrhizal associations with trees. Such fungi help plant roots absorb water and minerals while receiving carbohydrates from the host. Their presence therefore contributes to forest health, nutrient cycling and ecosystem stability.
India’s Position and Significance: India has no separate diplomatic “stand” on this discovery; its importance lies in biodiversity documentation, taxonomy and conservation. The finding shows that northeastern and eastern Indian forests may contain substantial undocumented fungal diversity.
Current Status: Russula griseopurpurata is now recognised as a new species to science, presently documented from Meghalaya and West Bengal.

Answer: Yes, but only after proper scientific testing. New fungi may have useful chemicals, enzymes or medicinal properties. However, premature commercial use can damage fragile populations or create safety risks. Research should first establish toxicity, ecological role and sustainable harvesting limits. Benefit-sharing with local communities should also be considered.

Answer: I would first protect the exact habitat from unnecessary disturbance. I would support scientific mapping to know its distribution and host trees. Local communities and field staff should be informed about its importance. I would also encourage long-term monitoring so that changes in population, forest health and climate impact can be studied.
