About the Royal Order of the Polar Star
The Royal Order of the Polar Star (Swedish: Nordstjärneorden) is one of Sweden’s oldest and most respected state honours. It was established on 23 February 1748 by King Frederick I along with the Orders of the Sword and the Seraphim.
Historically, the award was inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment and aimed to recognize contributions in public service, science, literature, and strengthening state institutions. Its motto, “Nescit Occasum” (“It never sets”), symbolizes the constant guiding nature of the Polar Star.
In 1975, Sweden restricted the award mainly to foreign citizens, royal families, and heads of government. In 2023, reforms reintroduced the possibility of awarding it to Swedish citizens for exceptional services.
