Rare Tree Species Humboldtia nairiana Discovered

Context

Scientists from the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute have discovered a new and extremely rare evergreen tree species, Humboldtia nairiana, in the riparian forests of the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary within the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve. The discovery highlights the exceptional biodiversity of the southern Western Ghats, one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots.

Background and Discovery

The newly identified species belongs to the genus Humboldtia, a group of trees largely endemic to the Western Ghats. It has been named in honour of renowned plant biotechnologist Prof. G. M. Nair. The species was discovered in a highly restricted habitat along riverbanks at an elevation of around 300 metres within the Agasthyamala landscape.
