The Union Cabinet has approved the extension of PMGSY-III from March 2025 to March 2028, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening rural connectivity and infrastructure. Originally launched in 2019, PMGSY-III marks a shift from merely providing road access to consolidating and upgrading existing rural road networks.
Salient Features: The total outlay has been revised from ₹80,250 crore to ₹83,977 crore. The scheme focuses on upgrading about 1,25,000 km of existing “Through Routes” and “Major Rural Links” that connect villages to key socio-economic centers such as agricultural markets (GrAMs), higher secondary schools, and hospitals. Construction timelines have been extended till March 2028, while bridge construction in hilly areas may continue till March 2029. Additionally, ₹961 crore has been sanctioned for 161 Long Span Bridges (LSBs). The funding pattern remains 60:40 for general states and 90:10 for northeastern and Himalayan states.
