Pakistan–Saudi Arabia–Türkiye Trilateral Defence Agreement (Mecca Joint Defence Agreement): Implications for West Asia and Beyond

Introduction

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed a trilateral defence agreement in Mecca in August 2026, committing themselves to strengthen defence cooperation, collective deterrence and coordinated responses to armed aggression against any member. Signed during the Mecca Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence, the agreement marks one of the most significant strategic realignments in West Asia in recent years. While the three governments have stated that the agreement is defensive in nature and not directed against any specific country, its timing—amid heightened tensions involving Iran, Israel, the Red Sea and the wider Middle East—has attracted considerable international attention.
