Operation Urja Suraksha: Safeguarding India’s Energy Lifeline

Operation Urja Suraksha is a recent initiative by the Indian Navy aimed at ensuring the secure passage of energy shipments—crude oil, LNG, and LPG—through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions in West Asia, particularly involving Iran and Israel. The operation involves the deployment of more than five frontline naval warships, including destroyers and frigates, to provide non-combat support such as physical escort, real-time navigation assistance, and electronic warfare protection to Indian-bound vessels.

Historically, India has relied heavily on maritime routes for energy imports, with over 80% of its crude oil sourced externally, much of it passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This chokepoint, linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, handles nearly 20% of global seaborne oil trade and a significant share of LNG supplies. Any disruption here has immediate implications for global energy prices and India’s economic stability, particularly inflation and fiscal balance.
