India has recently approved its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for the period 2031–2035 under the framework of the Paris Agreement. NDCs are country-specific commitments aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing climate resilience, to be revised every five years under Article 4.2 of the agreement.
The new targets reflect both continuity and ambition. India has committed to reducing the emissions intensity of its GDP by 47% from 2005 levels by 2035, building on an already achieved reduction of about 36% by 2020. It also aims to ensure that 60% of its installed electricity capacity comes from non-fossil fuel sources by 2035, a target already nearing achievement with over 52% capacity as of 2026. Additionally, India plans to create an additional carbon sink of 3.5–4 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent through forest and tree cover.
