The Government of India recently unveiled the official mascots “Pragati” and “Vikas” for Census 2027, symbolizing the country’s transition toward a modern, technology-driven population enumeration system. The mascots were introduced by the Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and represent the evolving demographic priorities and governance framework of India. “Pragati” depicts a female enumerator, while “Vikas” represents a male enumerator, highlighting gender parity and the increasing participation of women in national data collection and policy processes. Both mascots are shown holding digital tablets, symbolizing India’s first fully digital and paperless census.
Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases. The first phase, House Listing Operation (HLO), scheduled from April to September 2026, will collect information on housing conditions and amenities. The second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), will take place in February 2027, covering socio-economic and demographic data. However, in snow-bound regions such as Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh, the enumeration will be completed earlier in September 2026.
