Oil India Limited (OIL) announced a significant offshore natural gas discovery on 5 June 2026 at the Vijayapuram-3 exploratory well in the Andaman shallow offshore block. The discovery is important for India's energy security and strengthens the prospect of the Andaman-Nicobar region emerging as a new hydrocarbon-producing province.
Salient Features
The Vijayapuram-3 well is located about 15 km off the eastern coast of the Andaman Islands and was drilled in a water depth of approximately 355 metres. The well penetrated more than 1,900 metres below the seabed into Eocene-age geological formations. Production testing revealed a sustained and naturally pressurized flow of natural gas, confirming the presence of an active petroleum system and commercially promising hydrocarbon reserves.
