The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched a massive Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 12 states and union territories—A&N Islands, Lakshadweep, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Covering an estimated 51 crore voters, this exercise is among the biggest electoral roll verifications undertaken in two decades and is driven by the need for accurate rolls ahead of multiple state elections in 2026.
The revision follows a structured timeline. Preparatory steps begin in late October, followed by house-to-house enumeration from 4 November to 4 December 2025. The draft electoral roll will be released on 9 December 2025, with the claims and objections window continuing until 8 January 2026. Hearings, verifications, and rectifications will conclude in January, and the final revised rolls will be published on 7 February 2026, using 1 January 2026 as the qualifying date. Voter rolls in these states are “frozen” at the start of the process to prevent parallel additions or deletions.
