The bicentenary of Jyotirao Phule (1827–1890), commemorated on 11 April 2026, marks a renewed national engagement with his transformative ideas on social justice, education, and equality. Nationwide celebrations under the “Phule Across India” initiative, coordinated by the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation, aim to highlight his enduring relevance.
Born in Pune in a marginalized Mali community, Phule challenged entrenched caste hierarchies and gender discrimination. Deeply influenced by Enlightenment ideas, particularly from works like Rights of Man, he recognized education as the primary instrument of social emancipation. In 1848, he established India’s first indigenous girls’ school at Bhidewada, with Savitribai Phule becoming the first female teacher. He also promoted inclusive education for Dalits and initiated night schools for workers.
