The crisis escalated on 12 October 2025 when the elite CAPSAT unit joined the protesters and urged other military factions to revolt. CAPSAT swiftly took control of the capital with minimal resistance, and General Demosthene Pikulas was appointed Chief of the Armed Forces. On 13 October 2025, Rajoelina was evacuated by a French military aircraft to an undisclosed location. He denounced the events as an illegal power grab but did not formally resign.
