Kharg Island is a small coral and continental island located in the northern part of the Persian Gulf, approximately 30 km off the Iranian mainland in Bushehr Province. Despite its small size, the island plays a critical role in Iran’s energy infrastructure, serving as the country’s primary crude oil export terminal. Nearly 90–94% of Iran’s oil exports pass through this island, making it a vital component of Iran’s economy and a key source of government revenue.
