Kharg Island is a small coral and continental island located in the northern part of the Persian Gulf, approximately 30 km off the Iranian mainland in Bushehr Province. Despite its small size, the island plays a critical role in Iran’s energy infrastructure, serving as the country’s primary crude oil export terminal. Nearly 90–94% of Iran’s oil exports pass through this island, making it a vital component of Iran’s economy and a key source of government revenue.
The island hosts extensive oil storage and loading infrastructure, including large storage tanks with a capacity of around 28–30 million barrels after recent expansions. Kharg Island has specialized terminals capable of loading Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) and Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCCs) through facilities such as the T-Jetty and Sea Island terminals. Its theoretical export loading capacity is about 7 million barrels per day, although the pipeline supply from mainland Iran limits it to around 6.3 million barrels per day.
