The induction of INS Sanshodhak, the fourth and final ship under the Survey Vessel (Large) – SVL project, marks a significant milestone in India’s maritime capability, particularly in hydrographic surveying and ocean data acquisition. Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro, the vessel reflects over 80% indigenous content, aligning with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative. The name “Sanshodhak,” meaning “researcher,” aptly signifies its core role in scientific exploration and maritime mapping.
Technically, the ship displaces around 3,400 tonnes, measures 110 metres in length, and can achieve speeds exceeding 18 knots. It is equipped with advanced technologies such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), and multi-beam echo sounders, enabling precise hydrographic and geophysical surveys. It also features helicopter operations capability for platforms like HAL Dhruv.
