India–Thailand Joint Military Exercise MAITREE-XV 2026

Current Context

The 15th edition of the India–Thailand Joint Military Exercise MAITREE, known as MAITREE-XV 2026, is being conducted from 18 August to 31 August 2026 at Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani, Thailand. It is a bilateral army exercise between the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army and is intended to strengthen defence cooperation, improve interoperability and promote the exchange of operational experience between the two forces.

History of Exercise MAITREE

Exercise MAITREE was initiated in 2006 and has since developed into an important component of India–Thailand defence relations. It is generally conducted alternately in India and Thailand. The exercise focuses particularly on joint tactical operations, counter-terrorism, jungle warfare and coordination in difficult operational environments. The previous edition was held in India, further reinforcing regular military-to-military engagement between the two countries.

Major Features of MAITREE-XV

The 2026 edition emphasises joint counter-terrorism operations in urban, semi-urban and jungle terrain. Training includes tactical drills, cordon-and-search operations, intelligence-based missions, surveillance, communication procedures and familiarisation with weapons and equipment used by both armies. The exercise also incorporates aspects of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), thereby improving the ability of both forces to respond jointly to emergencies and natural disasters.

India’s Strategic Perspective

India considers Thailand an important partner in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region. Defence cooperation with Thailand complements India’s Act East Policy, its engagement with ASEAN, and its wider vision of regional peace and security. Enhanced interoperability is also useful for cooperation in United Nations peacekeeping operations and other multinational missions.

Current Status and Significance

MAITREE-XV is currently underway and is scheduled to conclude on 31 August 2026. The exercise reflects the growing strategic partnership between India and Thailand and strengthens mutual trust, professional understanding and operational coordination. Along with naval exercises such as Exercise Ayutthaya, Indo-Thai CORPAT and the trilateral SITMEX, MAITREE contributes to broader defence and security cooperation between the two countries.
