The Indian Orchid Festival (IOF) 2026 was held in Sikkim from 7–10 March 2026, highlighting India’s rich orchid diversity, particularly in the Eastern Himalayan region. The theme of the festival was “Orchids for Beauty & Prosperity.” The event aimed to promote orchid conservation, scientific research, and commercial floriculture while linking biodiversity with economic development.
The Indian Orchid Festival is an important horticultural and botanical event organised primarily by the ICAR–National Research Centre for Orchids (NRCO), Sikkim. It brings together scientists, farmers, floriculture entrepreneurs, and policymakers to showcase orchid species, research innovations, and commercial opportunities. The festival also supports India’s Act East Policy by promoting economic activities and tourism in the North-East through orchid-based horticulture and eco-tourism.
India is one of the world’s major centres of orchid diversity, with over 1,300 species recorded. The Eastern Himalayas and North-East India—especially Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim—host nearly 50–60% of India’s orchid species. Other important orchid regions include the Western Ghats, which contain many endemic species, and parts of Odisha, Darjeeling, and the Andaman–Nicobar Islands.
