Context
India and ASEAN have announced the I-2SEA (India–Southeast Asia) Submarine Cable System, a next-generation high-capacity fibre-optic undersea cable aimed at strengthening digital connectivity, cloud infrastructure, and AI-driven data transmission between India and Southeast Asia.
History
Submarine fibre-optic cables carry over 95% of global international internet traffic and form the backbone of the global digital economy. India has progressively expanded its undersea cable connectivity to support Digital India, cloud computing, and data centres. The I-2SEA project builds on this strategy by providing a new and resilient digital corridor linking India with Southeast Asia while reducing dependence on existing routes passing through geopolitically sensitive regions.
