Why in News?
Acharya Shri Ranchhodlalji Goswami of Ahmedabad has been selected for the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2025 by the Sangeet Natak Akademi for his outstanding contribution to preserving and promoting Haveli Sangeet, an ancient devotional music tradition associated with the Pushtimarg sect.
Background
Haveli Sangeet is a classical devotional music tradition that originated in the 16th century during the Bhakti Movement. It is closely associated with the Pushtimarg (Path of Grace), founded by Sant Vallabhacharya. During the Mughal period, when many temple idols were shifted to protected residences or havelis (mansions), devotional music performed in these sacred spaces came to be known as Haveli Sangeet. The tradition is deeply rooted in the devotional compositions of the Ashtachhap poets, including Surdas, Kumbhandas, and Parmananddas.
