India has inaugurated its first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in Northeast India at Moran Bypass in Dibrugarh, Assam, on NH-37 (NH-127). This marks a major step in strengthening strategic infrastructure in a sensitive border region.
Salient Features: The ELF is a specially designed stretch of highway that can function as an airstrip during emergencies or wartime. The Moran ELF is about 4.2 km long and built using Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) to withstand heavy aircraft loads. It can handle fighter jets like Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Dassault Rafale, as well as transport aircraft like C-130J Super Hercules. The project was executed by NHIDCL in coordination with the Indian Air Force at a cost of about ₹100 crore.
