India recently achieved a significant milestone in indigenous defence capability when the Defence Research and Development Organisation successfully conducted flight tests of the VSHORADS (Very Short-Range Air Defence System). The system is a man-portable air defence system (MANPADS) designed to neutralize low-altitude aerial threats such as aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The missile has been developed primarily by the Research Centre Imarat, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Indian defence industry partners.
VSHORADS represents a fourth-generation short-range missile system intended to strengthen India’s tactical air defence capabilities. It is especially suitable for deployment in difficult terrains such as mountainous border areas along the Line of Control (LoC) and Line of Actual Control (LAC) where heavy air defence systems cannot easily be transported. The missile has a strike range of approximately 6–8 km and can engage targets at an altitude of about 3.5–4.5 km.
