Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam (Missile Man of India)
Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (1931–2015) was one of India's most respected scientists, visionary leaders, and the 11th President of India (2002–2007). On 27 July 2026, India observed his 11th death anniversary, remembering his immense contributions to science, national security, education, and nation-building. Born in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, he studied Physics and later Aeronautical Engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT).
Dr. Kalam began his career at DRDO in 1960 and moved to ISRO in 1969, where he served as the Project Director of SLV-III, which successfully launched the Rohini satellite into orbit in 1980. Returning to DRDO in 1982, he led the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), overseeing the development of Prithvi, Agni, Trishul, Akash, and Nag missiles, earning him the title "Missile Man of India."
He played a pivotal role as the Chief Project Coordinator during the Pokhran-II nuclear tests (1998), strengthening India's strategic deterrence. As President, he became widely known as the "People's President" for his humility, accessibility, and commitment to inspiring young minds. His vision for a developed India was reflected in books such as Wings of Fire, India 2020, Ignited Minds, and My Journey.
Dr. Kalam received the Padma Bhushan (1981), Padma Vibhushan (1990), and Bharat Ratna (1997).
