Black Sea: Location, Ecology and Geopolitical Importance
The Black Sea is a strategically important marginal inland sea located between South-Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bordered by six countries—Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, and Türkiye. The sea is connected to the Sea of Azov through the Kerch Strait, to the Sea of Marmara through the Bosporus Strait, and further to the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas via the Dardanelles Strait, providing access to the Atlantic Ocean. Major rivers such as the Danube, Dnieper, and Dniester drain into the Black Sea.
A unique ecological feature of the Black Sea is its anoxic deep waters, where oxygen is almost absent below a certain depth. As a result, marine life is concentrated in the upper layers, while the deeper waters preserve organic material for long periods.
