Double Fortified Salt (DFS) – Combating Anaemia and Iodine Deficiency in India
1. Background and Recent Development: Recent research has highlighted Double Fortified Salt (DFS) as an affordable intervention against iron deficiency and anaemia in India. However, its adoption remains uneven despite its public health potential.
2. Composition and Technology: DFS contains two essential micronutrients: iron and iodine. Iodine supports thyroid function and brain development, while iron helps haemoglobin formation. Microencapsulation prevents unwanted chemical reactions between them.
3. FSSAI Standards: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India prescribes 850–1,100 ppm of iron and 15–30 ppm of iodine in DFS. Fortified foods are identified through the +F logo.
