Colonial Penal Settlement of Andaman Islands on UNESCO Tentative List
Context
India’s Colonial Penal Settlement of Andaman Islands was submitted to UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List on 22 May 2026. The proposed serial property includes Chatham Island, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island, Viper Island and the Cellular Jail in Sri Vijaya Puram. It has been proposed under cultural criteria (ii), (iv) and (vi).
