China has officially commenced construction of the Medog Hydropower Project, a massive dam on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet. The river enters India through Arunachal Pradesh as the Brahmaputra and later flows into Bangladesh as the Jamuna. Located in Medog County of the Tibet Autonomous Region, barely 50 km from the India–China border, the project is expected to become the world’s largest hydropower facility with an installed capacity of 60,000 MW, nearly three times that of the Three Gorges Dam. The project is estimated to cost around US$167 billion and aims to generate about 300 billion kWh of electricity annually, supporting China’s clean energy and carbon-neutrality goals.
