Context
The Union Ministry of Rural Development has officially launched the AI-Based Rural Internal Audit Portal to strengthen financial transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the implementation of rural development programmes. The portal marks a significant step towards AI-enabled digital governance in rural India.
Background
Traditionally, internal audits of rural development schemes relied on manual, paper-based processes that were often time-consuming and prone to delays, inconsistencies, and limited monitoring. With increasing public expenditure on flagship rural programmes, the need for a technology-driven, risk-based audit system became essential. The portal was conceptualised by the Office of the Chief Controller of Accounts (CCA) under the Ministry of Rural Development and developed in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC). It was successfully piloted in Chandauli district, Uttar Pradesh, from 1 April 2025 before its nationwide rollout.
