1. Special Intensive Revision: Over 1.5 crore names deleted from electoral rolls
The Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has entered its third phase across 16 States and three Union Territories, with more than 1.5 crore names deleted from existing voter lists. Analysis cited by The Hindu indicates that about 11% of electors have been excluded so far, though deletion rates vary sharply. Andhra Pradesh recorded the largest absolute deletion, about 44.89 lakh names, while Dadra and Nagar Haveli reportedly showed the highest proportional deletion. Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and several other States also witnessed exclusions. The exercise is intended to remove ineligible, duplicate, deceased or shifted voters and improve roll accuracy. However, the scale of deletion raises concerns about wrongful disenfranchisement. Electoral-roll purification is legitimate only when accompanied by transparent procedures, adequate notice, accessible appeals and sufficient opportunity for genuine citizens to establish eligibility. Accuracy and inclusion must therefore advance together in a democratic electoral system.
2. U.S. Bill and the threat of 100% tariffs over Russian oil
The U.S. Senate has passed legislation that could permit tariffs of up to 100% on imports from countries continuing to purchase Russian oil, increasing economic pressure on major energy buyers such as India and China. The measure is linked to Washington’s broader attempt to restrict revenue available to Russia during the Ukraine conflict. According to the front-page report, the legislation would allow the U.S. President to impose steep tariffs on countries importing Russian-origin oil, gas or uranium, subject to specified criteria. India has increased purchases of discounted Russian crude and therefore faces potential exposure if the measure is implemented aggressively. The American logic is that restricting Moscow’s energy earnings can weaken its capacity to sustain military operations. For India, however, energy purchases are shaped by affordability, supply security and national interest. The development highlights the tension between sanctions diplomacy and strategic autonomy. India must balance energy security, relations with Russia and its substantial economic engagement with the United States.
