1. Delhi High Court calls for audit of student hostels after building collapse
The Delhi High Court called for an audit of PG accommodations and student hostels after the Satya Niketan building collapse death toll rose to seven. The building owner, his spouse and son were arrested, while five Delhi civic-body officials were suspended for alleged lapses. The Court expressed concern over the safety of students living in such accommodation and directed authorities to examine whether buildings used as hostels comply with building bye-laws and possess valid permissions. It also sought details of authorised and unauthorised PG facilities. The incident exposes a structural urban-governance problem: rising demand for affordable student housing has encouraged conversion of residential buildings without adequate attention to structural strength, occupancy limits and fire safety. The logic of the Court’s intervention is preventive rather than merely punitive. Fixing responsibility after a collapse is insufficient unless unsafe structures are systematically identified. Regular structural audits, enforceable occupancy norms, transparent licensing and municipal accountability are essential to make student accommodation safe.
