1. Rijiju–Rahul Gandhi meeting seeks to break Parliament logjam
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju met Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in an effort to end the continuing disruption of Parliament and restore legislative functioning. The government clarified that it had no immediate plan to convene a Special Session for pushing through women’s reservation, delimitation-related legislation or other contentious measures. Rahul Gandhi, however, maintained that questions surrounding Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on police action and the alleged “donations theft” issue were non-negotiable and required discussion. Opposition parties also objected to the proposed FCRA amendments, arguing that the Bill should not be introduced in its present form. The political logic is that parliamentary functioning depends on negotiation between the treasury benches and Opposition, particularly when highly sensitive legislation is involved. The government’s stand stresses resumption of business, while the Opposition demands accountability first. The larger democratic lesson is that legislative efficiency cannot substitute for debate; negotiation, scrutiny and accommodation remain essential to credible parliamentary government.
