1. Supreme Court Permits Green Crackers for Two Days in Delhi-NCR
The Supreme Court permitted the bursting of certified green crackers in Delhi-NCR for two days, November 7 and 8, between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. The Court recognised that bursting crackers during Deepavali has religious and emotional significance for many people. However, it emphasised that religious practices cannot justify unrestricted environmental degradation. Delhi-NCR faces severe air pollution, particularly during winter, when weather conditions can trap pollutants near the ground. Green crackers are designed to reduce certain emissions compared with conventional firecrackers, but they are not pollution-free. The Court therefore imposed restrictions on timing, location, manufacturing and sale. The decision illustrates the constitutional balance between religious freedom under Article 25 and the right to a healthy environment associated with Article 21. Gist: Religious celebrations must be conducted responsibly, balancing cultural traditions with public health, environmental protection and the rights of other citizens.
