1. Supreme Court Seeks Report from Election Commission on Misuse of Form 7
The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to examine allegations of misuse of Form 7 during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Congress MP Tariq Anwar's petition alleged that Form 7 applications had been used to seek deletion of eligible voters, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. The ECI informed the Court that it had not accepted 75 Form 7 applications filed in violation of prescribed norms. Form 7 is used to object to the inclusion of a person's name in an electoral roll or seek deletion on legally recognised grounds. The controversy raises concerns about false objections, impersonation and the possible disenfranchisement of genuine voters. Under Article 324, the ECI is responsible for supervising elections, while Article 326 establishes adult suffrage. The Court sought a compliance report and necessary corrective action. Gist: Electoral-roll revision must prevent fraudulent entries without permitting wrongful deletion of eligible voters. Transparency, verification and accountability are essential.
