1. Major Anti-Drug Operation in Northeast India — ₹100 Crore Traced and 18 Arrested
Central investigating agencies and police conducted coordinated anti-drug operations across Assam, Mizoram and Manipur, resulting in the arrest of 18 individuals and the identification of approximately ₹100 crore linked to suspected narcotics trafficking. According to the newspaper, authorities also froze 1,424 bank accounts and identified several hundred suspected financial facilitators. Investigators alleged that trafficking networks used routes connecting India's northeastern States with Myanmar and Bangladesh. The operations highlight the importance of the Golden Triangle, a major illicit drug-producing region encompassing parts of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand. India's northeastern border areas are vulnerable to trafficking because of difficult terrain, cross-border networks and regional instability. The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, provides the principal legal framework for controlling narcotics. Gist: Drug trafficking is both a criminal and national-security challenge. Effective responses require coordinated intelligence, financial investigation, border management, international cooperation and rehabilitation programmes.
