1. Supreme Court upholds revamped MGNREGA: Welfare, rights and fiscal responsibility
The Supreme Court praised the revamped Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) framework, describing it as neither a “freebie” nor an instrument of exploitation. The challenge concerned changes under the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) framework, including an increase in guaranteed employment from 100 to 125 days and a revised Centre-State funding pattern. Petitioners argued that States could face a greater fiscal burden and sought examination of whether compensation remained adequate and whether employment under the scheme constituted a fundamental right. The Court emphasised that MGNREGA provides a statutory entitlement to work rather than gratuitous assistance. Its logic recognises employment guarantees as instruments of dignity, livelihood security and rural economic stabilisation. At the same time, implementation must ensure adequate wages, timely payments and sustainable fiscal arrangements. The larger issue is balancing rights-based welfare with cooperative federalism and administrative capacity.
2. CJP team attacked while inspecting Rajasthan government school
A team associated with the Congress’s School Thik Karo campaign was attacked while attempting to inspect a government primary school in Rampura-Kanwarpura village in Jaipur district. The team alleged that classes were being conducted in a cattle enclosure and sought to inspect conditions and verify whether adequate educational facilities existed. According to the report, their vehicles were damaged and women supporters were allegedly manhandled. The Congress blamed BJP-linked persons, while local representatives disputed aspects of the allegations and questioned the inspection initiative. The episode highlights a larger governance issue: government schools must meet minimum standards of safety, infrastructure, accessibility and dignity irrespective of political contestation. Political parties have a legitimate role in highlighting public-service deficiencies, but inspections and protests should remain peaceful and fact-based. Violence obstructs democratic accountability rather than resolving disputes. The appropriate administrative response is an independent verification of school conditions and the alleged assault, followed by corrective action based on evidence.
