1. India–Iran: peace, stability and freedom of navigation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the SCO Summit, emphasised peace and stability in West Asia and the need to preserve freedom of navigation and commerce. Iran, meanwhile, requested India to use its extensive diplomatic contacts to facilitate dialogue amid tensions involving the United States and Israel. Tehran argued that continued conflict damages not merely regional security but also international trade and economic stability. India’s position reflects its multiple interests in West Asia: energy security, trade routes, the Indian diaspora, relations with Gulf countries and Iran, and strategic connectivity through projects such as Chabahar. Disruption of maritime routes can increase freight, insurance and energy costs and undermine supply chains. The logical Indian approach is therefore to avoid rigid bloc politics while advocating diplomacy, sovereignty, peaceful dispute resolution and secure sea lanes. The broader message is that India seeks strategic autonomy, maintaining working relations with competing powers while supporting de-escalation and uninterrupted international commerce.
2. SIR 3.0: over six crore names deleted from draft electoral rolls
The third phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has resulted in the deletion of more than six crore names from draft voter lists across participating States and Union Territories. The report places the total deletion at about 6.15 crore, or 17.04%, although deletion rates vary sharply among States. Delhi recorded particularly large proportional deletions, while States such as Maharashtra recorded much lower rates. The Election Commission’s exercise seeks to update rolls by removing duplicate, deceased, shifted or otherwise ineligible electors and incorporating legitimate voters through claims and objections. However, deletion on such a scale raises questions about procedural fairness and the possibility of eligible citizens being excluded. Electoral-roll accuracy and electoral inclusion are equally important democratic objectives. The appropriate safeguard is therefore notice, transparent reasons for deletion, accessible claims and objections, adequate verification time and effective appellate remedies. Electoral integrity depends not simply on clean rolls but on ensuring that every eligible citizen retains a meaningful opportunity to exercise the franchise.
