1. Telegram Has Evolved into a New Dark Web, Government Tells Delhi High Court
The Union Government informed the Delhi High Court that Telegram has increasingly become a platform facilitating cybercrime, examination paper leaks, financial fraud, and illegal communication networks. The submission was made while defending restrictions imposed under the Information Technology Act. The government argued that the platform’s encrypted and largely anonymous structure has enabled criminal groups to coordinate activities beyond the reach of law-enforcement agencies. The Court, however, questioned whether a platform-wide restriction is proportionate and consistent with principles of free speech and digital rights. The broader issue concerns balancing cybersecurity and public order with privacy and freedom of expression. The editorial perspective suggests that governments must strengthen cyber-investigation capabilities and demand accountability from digital intermediaries without undermining legitimate communication. Long-term solutions lie in transparent regulation, judicial oversight, and technological cooperation rather than blanket bans that may affect millions of lawful users.
