1. Election Commission Announces Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls — Electoral Integrity and Voter Inclusion
The Election Commission of India announced a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in 17 States and Union Territories, including poll-bound Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Unlike the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the SSR does not require voters to submit citizenship documents or undergo fresh mapping against older electoral rolls. Instead, it uses existing electoral databases, verification procedures and applications for additions, corrections and deletions. The decision comes amid protests concerning alleged wrongful voter exclusions during the SIR exercise. Article 324 entrusts election supervision to the Election Commission, while Article 326 provides for elections based on adult suffrage. Accurate electoral rolls prevent duplication and ineligible entries, but excessively burdensome verification can exclude legitimate voters. Gist: Electoral reform must balance accuracy with inclusion. Transparent procedures, accessible applications, clear verification standards and effective grievance redressal are essential to protecting voting rights and maintaining confidence in democratic institutions.
