1. BRICS: Weaponisation of Technology and Critical Minerals
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the BRICS Summit, warned against the “weaponisation” of technology and critical minerals, arguing that excessive dependence on concentrated supply chains can expose countries to strategic pressure and economic disruption. Recent conflicts, pandemics and climate-related emergencies have demonstrated how interconnected systems can transmit crises across borders. Modi therefore called for BRICS cooperation to move beyond ideas towards concrete outcomes, particularly in technology, minerals, agriculture and disaster resilience. India highlighted initiatives such as a BRICS Critical Minerals Centre of Excellence, intended to facilitate best-practice sharing, and proposed cooperation in agricultural biotechnology and digital agriculture. The broader logic is that strategic autonomy increasingly depends not merely on military capabilities but also on assured access to semiconductors, minerals, digital technologies and resilient supply networks. India’s stand favours diversified and dependable supply chains rather than coercive economic dependencies. BRICS can consequently function as a platform for strengthening the technological and economic resilience of emerging economies.
