1. BRICS New Delhi Declaration: bridging the Iran-UAE divide
The 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi adopted the New Delhi Declaration after members reached a last-minute compromise over language concerning the West Asian conflict. The declaration called for maximum restraint and humanitarian assistance to Gaza, while avoiding specific attribution for particular military strikes, thereby accommodating divergent positions within the enlarged grouping. India played a mediating role, especially between Iran and the UAE, whose strategic interests differ sharply. Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged members to resolve differences through consensus rather than allowing external disputes to weaken BRICS cooperation. The logic behind the compromise is institutional: a grouping encompassing diverse political systems and geopolitical alignments can remain effective only through negotiated common ground. The declaration also condemned terrorism, supported Palestinian rights and addressed economic cooperation. India’s stand favoured strategic autonomy, dialogue and preservation of BRICS unity. The episode demonstrates that consensus-based multilateralism requires diplomatic flexibility, particularly when members themselves are parties to competing regional interests.
